Christmas Bikes!

Haven't updated the new bikes post in a while, so I figured I'd crank out a bunch for the upcoming Holiday...since all of these people did the right thing...and got themselves the best gift ever...A New Bike!

The one lady of the group, Laura, with her new B2R! Best of luck this season; we know you'll kick some butt on your new ride! Edmond got one of the last 2009 Giant Trinity Alliance 1 - Ultegra build. He's going back to Singapore and bringing the bike.

Alex came in as a runner looking to get into the sport. We had an opening, so he did his fit and got a new bike in the same day! Great choice with one of the last Felt AR4's of 2009.

Mike came in and walked out with one of the first B16's of 2010.

Rainy, a MCS team member, decided to invest in a TT bike, chosing the 2009 B2R!

We hope you all enjoy your new rides! Happy Holidays from Moment Cycle Sport

Clean your bike? What?

At the shop, the service department sees many types of bikes. Road and triathlon, yes, but we also get the occasional cruiser and mountain bike. Our mechanics are trained to fix and service every type of bike (yes, even unicycles). One thing that remains constant however, is that a clean bike is a happy bike. Keeping your bike clean isn't just a matter of aesthetics, especially when talking about the drivetrain (chain, front chainrings, and cassette). Your bike will run better and your drivetrain parts will last longer if they're kept clean.

Here is a basic overview on drivetrain cleaning. Check out our website for the dirty details on cleaning your drivetrain.
Required Tools:

  • Repair stand, or way to suspend the bike
  • Rag
  • Solvent
  • Lube
  • Ruler
  • Disposable Gloves
  • Small Screwdriver
  • Brush
  • Chain-Cleaner tool
Steps:

Check your chain for wear and stretching. Use the ruler to measure, looking for the 1 inch space between two pins. If it is longer than an inch, your chain is stretched and should be replaced. Wipe your chain clean using a rag. Then scrub your chain clean using the chain-cleaner tool. Clean your crankset using the brush. Clean the cassette using the shoe shine method with a rag dampened with solvent. Check the derailleurs and pulleys and wipe any excess gunk. Finally, lube the chain and wipe any excess lube away.

Do NOT spray your bike down with any high pressure hose as this can put water where water is not wanted. (In the headset, bottom bracket, etc).

If you have any questions, feel free to inquire with any of our staff at the shop.

Race Mechanics Clinic

Shop owner JT and service department manager Cory headed to Colorado Springs, CO for the Park Tools/Mavic Race Mechanics Clinic last weekend. They spent 4 days at the Olympic Training Center immersed in full day classes and hands on workshops. Here are some pictures of their adventure:One of the many OTC vans to transport the athletes and visitors. A snowy track.

Behind the Mavic car is Pikes Peak, one of Colorado's Fourteeners.

Cory and JT with the head mechanic from Park Tools, Calvin.

In the next Moment Cycle Sport Race Team meeting, JT will be discussing some of the USA cycling rules they learned, as well as some of the techniques for making sure you are ready on race day.

Moment Cycle Sport will also be hosting some Park Tools School clinics, where you can learn some basic bike maintenance and techniques to keep your bike running great. Look for more information in the new year!

Oh yeah, and we are having a 12 Days of Christmas special at the shop. Today is 30% off helmets, including those funky looking aero ones!

New Bikes - Lisa

Lisa came to the shop looking for a great fitting carbon bike with a good gruppo. After JT went through the fit process with her, she ended up with the beautiful Felt ZW5 with Shimano 105 components. Lisa says, "So far, the bike feels like a very natural extension of myself." That is the goal, and we hope you enjoy it for many more miles!

MCS Bike Handling Skills Clinic

Today, the Moment Cycle Sport race team had a bike handling skills clinic at Mission Beach. Brian Wilson started the group out with a little stretching. He then moved into skills on the grass, including no handed riding, close proximity riding, and making contact with others around you. Visual skills were practiced by looking behind you and in both directions. He then moved the group to Fiesta Island for paceline work. For more information on our race team email info@momentcyclesport.com and reference the MCS Race team.

New Bikes - Mike, Kerry & Kevin

Three new Parlee bikes have recently left the shop in the happy hands of three new owners. Mike came to the shop with weight and style in mind. He was a owner of an aluminum bike with a lot of nice parts. He finally decided to swap out frames to really get the weight of the bike down. And he ended up with one nice Parlee Z5. Outfitted with Dura Ace 7900, 3T stem, bars and seatpost with a Fi'zi:k saddle and finished off with a set of Reynolds Assult carbon clinchers.
Kerry purchased the Z5 with the Sram Red gruppo outfitted with Edge carbon bars, stem and seatpost and a Fi'zi:k saddle. He and Mike are some of the first owners of Parlee's newest edition to their line. This bike is still in the preliminary production stages and only a handful of them are available!
Kevin, one of Cory's buddies from Madison, Wisconsin, purchased a Parlee Z4 frame with Ghost decals. He built it up with some of his existing Campy Record parts. Weighing in at a little over 15lbs on his somewhat inaccurate bathroom scale, he's happy with his build.
We hope you all enjoy your beautiful rides!

New Bikes - Vickie

Vickie came to the shop as an existing owner of a custom Guru Crono triathlon bike, painted light blue and black. This time she was in for a road bike. A Guru Geneo. Light blue and white. Fully custom. After her fit, JT designed her bike and realized the standard 700cc wheel size of the Geneo wasn't going to work. He made Guru design a 650cc wheel bike.

This is a first edition 650cc wheel Geneo. He had to send out a different fork with the proper rake (angle of the fork) to Guru for paint to prevent toe overlap. She went with the Sram Force gruppo. Her wheels are special 650cc Velocity black rims with blue anodized nipples, and a Power Tap rear hub. She also has matching blue anodized skewers (and blue cable end caps!). Seriously, this bike is sick.

Vickie is now the owner of two amazing custom Guru bikes. She is one lucky woman. We hope you enjoy your new ride, Vickie!

New Bikes - Bob and Laura

Bob and Laura came into the shop looking for the fit first. They both already had existing bikes and were looking for more comfort, as well as possibly upgrading. After going through the fit process on our spinscan bike, they both decided on a custom Guru Magis triathlon bike. JT designed the layouts and had them sent to Guru. They both got the new Ultegra 6700 gruppo which gives the ulitmate balance of lightweight and rigidity, as well as the HED. Blackdog aerobars. Wheel choice was the Reyonlds Solitudes. Bob got an Adamo saddle and Laura opted for the Selle Italia Diva saddle.

They are both half ironman finishers and are volunteering this year at Ironman Arizona, and looking to sign up for IMAZ 2010. Laura's old bike, "white lightning" has had enough, and she thinks she'll now be able to edge out Bob at their next race. Now that the playing field is even, we'll see who can take the first win. Oh and by the way, nice shirt Bob! (San Diego Triathlon Classic participant).

GURU. One soul at a time. We hope you enjoy your rides Bob and Laura!

TCSD meets Chrissie Wellington

Last Thursday, the reigning three time Ironman World Champion, Chrissie Wellington, came to speak to the Triathlon Club of San Diego. Bob Babbitt was interviewing. She spoke of her roots as a student and swimmer and her transition into triathlon, previously working for the UK government. This year she broke the overall Women's Kona record, as well as the overall Ironman record by a woman. Congratulations Chrissie!

Moment Cycle Sport was on hand to answer questions about the new Giant Trinity triathlon bike. Here's Erin taking a peek at the new ride. And JT looking cool, sporting the Giant 100% UV protection shades.Chrissie was nice enough to stay until everyone got a signed poster and picture with her. Here is Rachel from the shop posing with Chrissie. We hope everyone enjoyed the surprise visit from a triathlon celebrity.
With Smiles,

New Bike - Stacy

Stacy came in with a used bike that got her started into the triathlon world. She got a fit but after racing on her "old" bike, knew it was time for an upgrade. She settled on the Guru Magis carbon tri bike with Dura Ace components. A blue Adamo saddle and blue bar tape and she was sold. More importantly, the bike fit her. Because of her stack and reach, a 650cc bike was more appropriate. She just finished the U.S. Women's Triathlon in San Diego on her new ride. We hope you love it!

New Bikes! Tanya, Nelson and Dan

Tanya came to the shop looking for a great bike for her first triathlon. She is a member of the first VAVI Triathlon Club. What a great group of people they have training in a sport we love. The primary goal for the group was to train to compete in the Mission Bay Triathlon October 4th. Tanya came to us with little time to spare, but we were able to get her on her Giant Avail 1 just in time! She opted for the beginners package and got everything she needed for her first race. Here she is in transition ready to roll at the wee hours of the morning. She finished and was even featured on the cover of the San Diego Union Tribune! Congrats girl!
Here is Dan with his new Guru Evolo. A nice sharp white paint job and some blue bar tape really make this bike stand out.
Nelson came to the shop looking to upgrade to a carbon frame. He ended up with a Felt Z35 with Shimano 105 components, which is a great bike at the price point.
We hope you are enjoying your bikes!

Why Custom?

Because you can.

We are a fit first bike shop. We know and believe the way a bike fits you is directly proportional to how comfortable you ride, as well as the speed you ride at a certain power output. A poor fitting bike can slow you aerodynamically, fatigue you faster,  lower your power output, and can even cause injuries.

So really, why custom? Does everyone need one? Probably not. Would most people notice a significant benefit? Yes. Here's why:

First, the fit is perfect. The bike is designed underneath your ideal body position. Because your ideal body position can change over time it is best to start in the nominal position with a nominal stem.  You can go forward and back from that middle position. So don't worry about buying a custom bike and then changing, because there isn't a fit that doesn't need to be adjusted. You think a couple centimeters doesn't matter? Think again.

Production bike company: designing for the middle of bell curves. If your fit puts you at the end of the rails with the shortest stem, you have no where to go. Production bike companies ask this question:

What does guy at size 54 look like? 5'10" 160lbs? Okay, build it around him.

What if you are 200lbs? You'll probably need a stiffer frame to handle your power.
Lighter? You probably want a more responsive frame.
Monkey arms? So you're saying I'll need a 160mm stem? Hmm.

Not only do custom bikes do custom geometry and tube length, they can change the carbon layout. Changing the fiber orientation will adjust the responsiveness. Change the amount and type of fibers and you change your given ride. Are you a standing or seated climber? Different layout. Custom bike manufacturers will ask you these questions to create a bike built under your needs.

Set your fit appointment today to discuss your bike options to see if a custom bike is for you. (Of course it is!) Guru is offering Tri Club San Diego members on the next 20 custom Guru Crono bikes. Call us at 619-523-2453 for more information.

Oh yeah, you want a bitchin' paint job?  They know how to make a bike shine.

Here are some custom bike manufacturers:

Guru Bikes: One Soul at a time. Here is what Guru has to say about custom bikes:

"We believe a bicycle is more than a piece of equipment.

It is the ultimate interface between man and the road, one that should feel like a natural extension of your body. That's why we custom craft every frame we make based on individual rider specifications. From carbon layup and metal welding to final clear coat, we do it all ourselves in our ultra-modern facility based in Montreal, Canada. That allows us to sweat every detail with one goal in mind: to make you the perfect bike. The one that will unleash your full potential on two wheels.

For us, custom is not an exercise in vanity or luxury – it's all about precision serving performance. Contrary to other custom builders, we go way beyond made-to-measure geometry to produce some of the most technologically advanced bicycles in the entire industry. Our composites program, in particular, pushes the boundaries of custom manufacturing:  F.E.A.-tested, seamless frame designs that take full advantage of carbon fiber's tensile properties. An in-house carbon lay-up methodology that allows us to pin-point the location and direction of the material. A proprietary molding process that uses internal pressurization to generate singular, monocoque parts with an exceptional fiber-to-resin ratio. It's all rigorously engineered, based on aerospace standards, to deliver the purest, most powerful ride you have ever experienced."

Parlee Cycles: TRUE CUSTOM

"Our frames, molds and tooling were designed from the ground up to build true custom frames. No single company building with carbon fiber can match the range of customization in the PARLEE lineup. For 2007 we offer full custom in the Z1, Z2 and Z3 models. PARLEE Cycles is the trusted name in custom carbon fiber frames. Some say that it is impossible for a bike to be lightweight, responsive, stiff and comfortable at the same time. Any PARLEE rider will say their PARLEE achieves the perfect balance of efficiency, comfort, durability and style.

In achieving our goal to build the world’s finest carbon fiber frames there has been no room for compromise in materials, craftsmanship, fit, or customer service.

The guiding design parameter at Parlee is performance. Bob believed from day one that carbon was the best material for racing frames and has continued to refine his designs with performance as the number one goal. Every element of a PARLEE frame is optimized to give the rider the maximum amount of efficiency in power transfer along with the maximum amount of vibration dampening. Carbon has ideal shock dissipation properties that when properly employed can give a ride quality that is unmatched in titanium, aluminum, steel or any hybrid thereof. The key is properly aligning the fibers."

Moment Cycle Sport offers custom builds from both of these companies. Financing available. Call today: 619-523-2453.

Time Trialing

The Fiesta Island Time Trial Series had another stop this weekend and some of the ladies of the Moment Cycle Sport racing team headed out on Saturday for the team time trial. All set to go on their Guru's! Lynne, Elaine, Amy and Rachel had been practicing for a couple weeks, preparing for their first race together. The day started early, arriving to the island when it was still dark. After checking in, they began their warmups on the stationary trainers.

Mechanic Cory came and saved the day helping out with wheel swaps and adjustments. Ethan, Cory's son and our #1 fan, was there tailgating with us. 7:21:00 was the start time. They entered the start house and were off. (No they didn't get to ride down a ramp like the tour riders.)

Halfway through the first of six laps they were advised that a rider was down on the course ahead. After passing they were confronted with an ambulance and a police car driving the wrong way on the island. As you can imagine it was mass confusion. They kept riding only to come across the road being blocked on the backside again. After some off-roading on the sand they started again. Other teams were stopping, as were they. But they were once again told to keep going. By the third lap, the police had finally shut down the race.

Apparently, the downed rider is going to be okay.

The following day was the individual time trial. Rachel decided to show up race morning and get on the waiting list. She got in and managed to win her age group and place 3rd overall. Congrats!

New Bikes!

We want to celebrate with everyone who purchases a bike at Moment Cycle Sport. Picking up your finished bike, the first ride, (the first credit card statement - just kidding) should be special occasions, and at the shop we get to be a part of that pickup day. Sharing those events is something we want to do with a little thing called "New Bike."

Today is the first installment. "New Bike: Pey-Lih." She is the owner of a custom Guru Ventus time trial bike. Finished with the new Ultegra 6700, Reynolds Assault carbon clincher wheelset along with the Adamo seat, this bike is a looker with a flashy red/white paint job. We hope you love it!

Love,

Endurance sports still fit during the recession

Moment Cycle Sport in the news. San Diego News Network posted an article on endurance sports and quoted shop owner JT Lyons.

“Endurance races are often a box to check on a person’s lifetime to-do list,” said Lyons. “They’re going to keep doing what they love to do but they’ll just cut back on the number of races they enter.”

What do you think? Has the economy made you cut back? Or are endurance sports, and their associated costs a part of your disposable income must have's?

Tour Viewing Party

Moment Cycle Sport recently hosted a Tour de France Viewing Party for Stage 20. Last Saturday, we had about 30 viewers stop by the shop to watch the final mountain stage and second to last stage in the tour unfold on our 72" television. Wine, cheese, and beer for the Belgians were served and Garmin Slipstream Camelbak water bottles were given out to the faithful watchers. Thanks to our new shop mechanic Dave for the pictures.

Mmm...wine and bikes and tour riders = a great Saturday afternoon.
