Up & Coming

We are getting prepped for a busy spring/summer here at Moment Cycle Sport. With our Grand Re-Opening coming up and all of our regular events, MCS is a busy place!

Make sure to bookmark our Events Page - we will continue to rotate new events into our schedule. Bike Maintenance Clinics will happen monthly over the summer to ensure continued success with your skills, and more advanced classes will also be added!

May is Bike to Work month. We are a Pit Stop for bike to work day on Friday, May 20th. Stop by on your way to work for bagles, coffee and fun! Prizes given away all morning long!

We are having a shop challenge to see who can commute the most! Since JT is here most often, he'll be the likely winner - if he can get motivated to ride! Make sure those lights have working batteries, those tires are in good condition (because we know the roads aren't!) and put those helmets on. It's Bike to Work month. Bring your commuter in for service and receive $10 off our regular tuneup with mention of this blog posting during the month of May!

We've been out in the community, showing off our Dynamic Fit Unit. We were recently seen at the Liberty Station Spring Fling and the Gran Fondo exposition. Congrats to the Dynamic Bike Fit winner, Jim Clark!

Our April bike maintenance clinic went very well. We are having another one in May - Saturday the 28th at 1:00pm! If you'd like to attend, please rsvp to info@momentcyclesport.com

Cory, getting his maintenance teaching on!
And finally, if you are thinking about joining the Triathlon Club of San Diego, come out this month to the beginner and newbie meeting! It's May 12th at 6:00pm - come out for an evening of pizza, beer and triathlon info to get you psyched and ready for the season! We are the official bike shop sponsor of TCSD and proudly support the club and it's members!

Happy Riding!

Erin @ Oceanside

Congrats to all the Oceanside participants. We had many MCS Bikes and Bike Fits out on the course. Here is Erin's race report - She went on to finish 3rd in her first season in the 25-29 AG - and in her first 70.3 race qualifying her for the 70.3 World Championships in Las Vegas this summer. Erin had her bike fit at Moment Cycle Sport in January 2011, and rides a Moment Felt B2 size 50.
p.s. she rides with 15cm of drop, comfortably!
Erin Hunter's 2011 Oceanside Experience
A lot can happen between the day you sign up for a half-IRONAMN and actual race day. For me, this could not be truer. All you can do is prepare yourself as best as possible and go out there and have fun. (Editor's note: Erin was hit by a car during a triathlon in September 2010, needing shoulder surgery to repair her separated shoulder - she has since made a great (but not quite full) recovery, being able to participate in this event)

The swim and run portion were the least of my worries. The bike leg I was slightly concerned about for two reasons (1) I am typically ready to get off of my bike about 15 miles into any race (which is no good since the bike leg is 56 miles) and (2) my legs were always so tired at the end of the bike that I have a hard time transitioning in to the run. My confidence was slightly boosted when I purchased my new triathlon bike (2010 Felt B2) at Moment Cycle Sport two months prior to California 70.3. Instantly I was a couple miles per hour faster and more comfortable on my bike.

Finally, race day arrived! It was exciting to be part of something so big but still apprehensive about racing for 70.3 miles. The swim went well, granted I was slightly disappointed with my time but I am going to blame that on all the people I had to swim around! The bike went AWESOME! As soon as I got on Camp Pendleton I tucked myself into aero position and stayed there the majority of the bike; which really gave me an advantage on the way back due to the strong head winds. I have an aggressive aero position on my bike and to be able to stay comfortable and so relaxed while being down in my aero bars is new experience for me. It wasn’t until the last six miles I had that urge to get off my bike; big improvement from before..

Coming into transition I was so excited; I couldn’t believe I was actually competing in a half-IRONMAN. I almost wanted to cry with excitement because I was so happy! Transition was quick and easy; off to run 13.1 miles I go. I was anticipating the first few miles to be difficult while my legs transitioned from bike to run BUT that wasn’t the case. My legs felt pretty fresh and ready to run fast as soon as I got out of transition. Who knew getting fit to your bike could help so much?!?! I felt great for most of the run. Seeing people you know every couple minutes really helps motivate you to keep plugging along. As a result I ran a PR in my half-marathon! Not in my wildest dreams did I think that would happen.

Overall, I had an amazing experience. It wouldn’t have been as an enjoyable experience with out help from my wonderful coach/boyfriend Stephen Banister, support from my family and friends, and Moment Cycle Sport who fit me perfectly and provided me with an amazing bike.

Congrats Erin - we wish you the best of luck in VEGAS!

Christopher's 1st Triathlon!

We have a guest blogger today - our new mechanic, Christopher! JT convinced him to do the Tri Club of San Diego's March club race this past weekend - as his FIRST triathlon - and with minimal training. Thanks for being a trooper, Christopher, and best of luck with your triathlon career! We are glad you can now relate!

Standing on the cold shore in the middle of the wet-suited pack, squinting as hard as my eyelids would allow, I wanted nothing more than to see the first buoy we were all aiming for in the first leg of the seven hundred meter swim. It wasn’t going to happen. Everything looked like a Monet painting to me without my trusty spectacles. So I took a deep breath, asked an extremely nice woman to point me in the direction that we sought and put confidence in my follow-the-leader ability. The horn was about to blow in what would be my first triathlon.

After the horn blew (or was it a whistle? I can’t recall), I found myself running into the water after planning to go slow and pace myself. It really didn't matter because my swimming abilities, or lack thereof, put me in my place near the back shortly after leaving the shore. I’m sure that if someone could have seen me during the first leg of the swim, they would have compared my form to that of a wind-up scuba diver toy, exhaustingly thrashing but barely moving. I stopped to allow the wetsuit to do its job, while I collected myself just long enough to access my direction. I began again, trying to focus this time on simple, fluid movements. Slowly and surely I found a rhythm that all four of my limbs could move to without stepping on too many toes.

I arrived back at the bank feeling pretty good and began my first transition. It wasn’t nearly as difficult to peel the wetsuit off as it was to put on; thank God. I decided to keep it simple during the transitions and went barefoot. I didn’t like the idea of putting bare dirty and wet feet into my shoes, but as JT had explained, socks are one more thing to struggle with that would most likely result with even more dirt in my shoe. That was that and I was to the mount line and off for my first of five laps on the bike.

Allow me to save us both some time and just come out with what I learned during the bike and run sections because they go hand- in -hand. First, whether you are in it to win or just in it, it's the details that make the difference -- wearing the correct top and bottom, using wetsuit and anti-chafing lubricant, having a comfortable and aerodynamic position on your bike, knowing how far you still need to go and, of course, running in the best shoes for you. These are some of the things that most triathletes already know about, but some that I wanted to learn for myself. I wanted to experience the difference between the best and, in some cases, the worst. This way when someone asks me something like, “Do I really need aero bars on my bike?", I can tell them about my first triathlon as a green human kite collecting all the wind I could as I spread my arms wide to grasp my bar ends.

Aside from my daily commute to our shop, and errands I need to run, my training for this first Tri Club race was almost obsolete. So with that, and the fact that some of my apparel and biking elements needed some real attention, I feel my first introduction to the world of Tri was a success. I never felt intimidated, with the exception of perhaps the passing of the occasional disk wheel. The people were welcoming and the breakfast hit the spot. I will continue to digest my first race and see how many improvements I can make for my next one. There is always room for improvement!

Congrats Christopher! We are all proud of you!

Construction Begins!

Hello! First off we want to thank you for being patient through our entire move and build out process. We are excitedly anticipating the renovations being completed to our space in Liberty Station.

Couple things to note:
1) WE ARE STILL OPEN! (Regular Store Hours)
2) Temporary location is just next door to the space being renovated. - FOLLOW THE RED ARROWS once you get to the parking lot and main space. I'm sorry, but there is no yellow brick road, however skipping is permitted.
3) Bike Fittings are ongoing and booking quickly! Schedule your fit online!
4) We love our customers! Please call us with any questions...unless you are looking for the land of OZ.
5) Tuesday/Thursday shop rides and the Thursday shop run are still ON! Check our our Events Page for more details. Parking is still plentiful.

Anywho - Here are some pictures of what's been happening. Look for updates on our blog as well as our Facebook Page throughout the build!

Triathlon 101 CLinic

Moment Cycle Sport hosted the Triathlon 101 clinic for the Tri Club of San Diego in February. The great Steve Tally was the presenter for the evening and did a wonderful job as usual. I went to one of his presentations back in 2008 before my first triathlon. His tips and tricks were presented in a fun and informational manner and made my first triathlon and many after, successful! From the swim, bike, and run, to transitions and gear, he covered it all! Here are some pictures from the evening.

Thanks to Steve and all who attended. Congrats to the raffel winners - enjoy the Fluid Recovery Drink! Keep in mind we have some great beginner packages that ease the barrier into completing your first tri!
